What is the difference between a celebrant and a registrar?

A celebrant is an independent individual who creates and officiates custom ceremonies. A celebrant is not restricted by law in terms of ceremony content or location. A celebrant led wedding is not a legal ceremony.

A registrar is an official employed by councils and is responsible for keeping legal records. Registrars are limited in their ceremony content as they must include declarations and binding words and must be held in a licensed venue. A registrar cannot include any religious or spiritual content in their ceremonies. A registrar led ceremony is a legal ceremony.

Do we have to legalise our marriage, and how do we do so?

No! There’s no need to legalise your marriage if that’s not your thing. Should you wish to legalise your marriage, both parties will need to give notice at a local registry office and you will need to partake in a ‘Statutory ceremony’ with two witnesses. This will take approximately 15 minutes in which you will declare that you are legally free to marry each other and make contractual vows. You will need two witnesses to do this, but you can save all the fun bits like rings, music, dresses and kisses for your fabulous celebrant led ceremony.

If its not legal is my celebrant led ceremony less important?

Absolutely not, the legality of marriage is just that. It is simply legality. Your wedding ceremony is about so much more than obtaining a legal status. It is about you and your love for each other, and we will celebrate that hard on your wedding day.

Where can I hold my ceremony?

As a celebrant I am not limited to licensed venues. Your ceremony can take place at any time, anywhere providing we have the owners permission.

Do I have to have my ceremony within a certain time of my legal ceremony?

No, you can have your celebrant led ceremony whenever. Most people choose to do their legal ceremony before their celebrant ceremony, but you can do it whenever you like

Are there any restrictions on our ceremony?

Absolutely none! You are free to choose everything, including readings and music and you can even have your favourite pooch as your ring bearer if you like! As a celebrant I am free to completely personalise your special day.

We are a mixed faith couple, can you marry us?

Absolutely yes! We are completely inclusive and will marry you regardless of sexual orientation, religious affiliation or gender identification. As long as you are both over the age of 18 and fully consenting, we will marry you. Should you wish to include any religious or cultural content we can do that for you.

What will you wear for our ceremony?

If you have not specified what you would like me to wear I will wear something fitting to the occasion (and comfortable!). But if you would like me to adhere to a colour scheme or a theme, I am more than happy to do so. I will not wear any religious items.

We are outside of your stated areas, will you travel for us?

If we are right for each other, I am more than willing to travel for you! If you are outside of my area then there will be a travel fee, this is entirely dependent on distance.

We are UK based but getting married abroad, do you do destination weddings?

Unfortunately I am unable to officiate destination weddings owing to having a young family, but am more than happy to point you in the direction of some of my fabulous colleagues who do.

Do you only do weddings?

I offer weddings and vow renewals as well as commitment ceremonies, birthday celebrations and script writing services. But I am happy to discuss any of your life events with you, whether you’d like to celebrate a graduation, retirement, name change or even divorce! I hope to expand my services in the future with further training.

How does the process work?

The process varies depending on what ceremony we are celebrating, I will be able to provide a more precise break down of the planning process if you drop me an email 🙂
